Walking Your Dog for Weight Loss

i heard your interview today on CBC…i was as shocked as you to learn that there are businesses in teh USA that take dogs for up to 12 weeks for weight loss. as a rehab practisioner in Toronto, and only working by informed consent with rDVM’s i find it most frustrating that those with little to no knowledge can claim they can help dogs that are overweight, or helping dogs with orthopedic issues associated with being overweight.

These people are ticking time bombs and ruin it for people like myself that have done the training, work with rDVM’s and provide tailored programs (with owners and their Veterinarin) to ensure maximum success.

With a growing plethora of canine ‘swimming pools’ opening to do ‘rehab’ and ‘weightloss’ i worry about the pets that are using them, and the owners who believe these people are doing it safely.

i agree 100% with your comments on ‘exercising your dog’. Exercise is tataemount to safe and effective weightloss. after interviewing 100′s of dogs for our ‘woof watchers program’ i can tell you most of these people come to us with a domino effect of being overweight, decreased movement, increasing pain and OA symptoms, and so the cycle continues. With this i tell all my overweight client owners, “if you helped your dog loose weight, you would not have to see me!” and my other comment..”i did not realize your dog had thumbs” (usually i get a strange look) then i follow with…”if a dog had thumbs he could open the fridge door and feed himself”!!!!

    keep up the good work
